Sometimes women say to me they would like to have something really unique to wear. My answer to that is be unique yourself and the fashion will simply follow. Only when one follows their heart and not what society and others dictate to them will they be unique. Once this is accomplished, the fashion will simply fall into place. SILKERI can help a unique woman with her style.

Article in Bazaar Magazine
When I set out to meet Kerry Sellers, the woman behind Silkeri, a unique collection of silkwear tastefully hand-made in the Palace City of India, I anticipated garments of quality and delicacy. What I did not expect was to be enchanted by their simplicity, fine patterns in rich colors, and end up rediscovering art in Silk. According to ancient legend, China was the first civilization to discover and practice sericulture – breeding of silkworm for silk – and for nearly three millennia (yes, the dot.com era was still centuries away) they kept it as one of their best guarded secrets. Once considered the exclusive privilege of royalty, silk remains a wonder of nature. Clothes made from silk are not only beautiful, but also warm in cool weather and cool in hot weather – quite as marvelous as the silk worm itself. Interestingly, silk was used for musical instruments, fishing-lines, bowstrings and even paper. It’s these fascinating qualities of silk on which Silkeri has capitalized. It has the distinguished advantage of using only pure vintage silk in all is outfits, which means that each outfit is one of a kind! “Silkeri is unique in more ways than one,” says Kerry. When she launched Silkeri in November 2008, she was keen on providing women with quality products that are skin and eco-friendly. A wide range of garments were developed, dipped in natural colors and dyes that are harmless to skin. As a result, you have, eco-friendly garments made from one of the oldest natural resources that not only look fabulous, but also feel exquisite to your skin. If you like what you have read so far, you will love what you read next. Silkeri is quiet proud of its stellar creation – the Smart Skirt, which can divinely be worn in 100 different ways and not just as a skirt but also as a top, tunic and shawl! Yes, it sounded incredulous to me too, but when you see the Smart Skirt and the multiple ways it can really be worn, you are left more than convinced. What more can a girl desire for her wardrobe? “Silkeri has been as much a surprise to me as to my clients,” explains Kerry. “The outfits are proving to be quite popular among women who wear hijab, because it is so light and feminine. Interestingly, men are just as impressed as women! Quiet a few of my clients have been encouraged by their husbands to buy Silkeri outfits. I think the feminism appeals to both genders equally,” says Kerry, who is pleased with her growing clientele. Kerry has successfully promoted Silkeri wears at Bait Diva, American Women’s League, British Ladies Society, AUK and Kuwait Medical Association. She plans to expand her collection with more s and lengths to meet varied needs and dressing tastes. There’s no doubt that Silkeri’s versatility will appease most dressing styles. In December 2006 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2009 to be the International Year of Natural Fibres, so as to raise the profile of silk and other natural fibres. It appears Silkeri not only has the season’s fashion appeal, but is also promoting Silk as a natural fibre. If you are looking for lightweight and self-confident styles, then with a little bit of imagination and a touch of accessories, Silkeri outfits can effortlessly double up for day as well as evening wear. Go indulge! |

Yallah Shabab
The event started Friday evening and lasted all day Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10 PM. My relief failed to show up so I was there the entire time. Boy was I tired! We had a very rainy weekend but hopefully everyone showed up.
Across from me was GemStone Charms, a business owned by a young entrepreneur Shaikha who is still in high school. She makes jewelry, and head bands and is a very creative young lady. She had crowds around her table constantly.
Next to her was a dozen students from American School of Kuwait that were part of a program called 'injaaz'. It is similar to 'Junior Achievement'. They were selling ribbons that can be used for anything by people were primarily wearing them on their wrists. What was printed on the ribbon was the statement 'I'm Positive'. By purchasing the ribbon for a half KD you are making them a promise that you plan for now on to be positive. I'm pretty sure they sold at least one to almost everyone there.
Over all it was a very good exhibition, and I look forward to participating in a future one should they decide to organise another.

How to choose your 'SMART SKIRT'
"SMART SKIRTS' are sold all over the world and the prices vary as does the quality. One should be aware of the quality of the fabric when shopping. 'SMART SKIRTS" are supposed to be made from vintage sari fabrics. Why 'vintage'? Well a good sari can run anywhere from $200 and up, but 'vintage' sari's can be had for a substantially less expensive price. Another reason a 'SMART SKIRT' should be made from a sari is because it will then be unique and no one else will have it. If you buy your "SMART SKIRT" online make sure a close up shot of the fabric can be viewed and if you see they are offering many of the same fabric ,rest assured it is not sari fabric but mass produced and most likely not silk fabric.
For the most beautiful fabrics which will truly give you a beautiful piece of clothing make sure it is from a silk sari. How can you know if it is silk or from a sari? Silk comes in many different textures as do the 'SMART SKIRTS'. Some are very lightweight and transparent while others are heavier or stiff. A sari often times has changing patterns and colors in it while mass produced fabrics will not. A sari often times has gold trim work called 'zari' on it, while mass produced fabric will not. If you examine the fabric itself the front and back will be the same and you will see the woven threads. At the end of the day , if it is strikingly beautiful in color and catches your eye, and feels good to your touch ,chances are it is a genuine silk sari and not mass produced fabric.
You should first think about the ways you would be planning to drape it around your body before you choose the texture as any 'SMART SKIRT' technically can be worn so many different ways , not all textures look as good worn in particular styles.
After you have contemplated and argued with yourself for probably a good hour, buy the 'SMART SKIRT" take it home and start experimenting with the many ways it can be worn , but yet the styles that look good on you!

SILKERI'S 'SMART SKIRT'S are VINTAGE

The term 'vintage' has become quite fashionable. And it's quite good that 'vintage' is now the 'model' instead of fur. I love vintage everything. In my home my dining room walls are adorned with vintage photographs of my family dating as far back as the mid- 1800's.
Whenever I handle or own something vintage I try to imagine this thing has a life of it's own and wonder what it must have gone through or has seen in it's life. Or how many people it has served and who. I also like to give it credit for how well it has held up which again brings us back to a scientific discussion of 'green'.
Obviously the more life we can get out of a product the more efficient it's role will become. As opposed to cheap things such as cheap plastics ,and artificial fabrics which require more processing and chemicals in order to get the final product only to have a very short life span, vintage silk sari fabrics can be considered 'green' , as the fiber is natural thus giving it a long life span to be used as long as possible. Therefore they can be used over and over again. And to keep the cycle going, please do pass your 'SMART SKIRT' along when you've decided you no longer need it. Whether it be to give it to someone else, or cut it up and make beautiful pillow covers from it.
